Jim Husted the “Motor Magician”

Jim Husted at Hi-Torque Electric is the fellow that replaces the “magic smoke” in the KillaCycle┬« motors when we “let it out” by cramming to many amps, volts, watts, RPM, HP, etc. through the two 6.7 inch diameter motors that push the bike down the track at 168 MPH.

As you can see in the picture, Jim keeps very busy rebuilding (and creating) EV motors both new and antique. Each of his motors is obviously a work of love and quality craftmanship.

We are very grateful to Jim Husted for all the expert advice and “tricks” he has shown us that allow the KillaCycle to go as fast as it does on the track. We seem to show our gratitude by pushing his motors “just a bit” too far. ;-) We send back the blackened, plasma-burned, molten blob, remains of the motor, only to have it reappear on the doorstep of my shop a few weeks later, better than it ever was new.

  1. Hey-

The silver motor on the shelf behind Jim looks like the WEstinghouse 3HP motor that Jim finished for my 1911 Hupp-Yeats electric ( http://www.evalbum.com/1018 )

    Or maybe not.

Jim does amazing work. I just got my Westinghouse back from him and it’s awesome…will post on my site soon.

  2. Does Jim Husted at Hi-Torque Electric also work on AC motors? Does he like AC motors and does he appreciate the advantages of AC over DC?

  3. Bill

I have a dirt bike I would like to refit with an electric motor what would be your recommendation for researching info to do this and contacts for parts?

You can look at the Killacycle sponsors and you will see Hi-Torque Electric. Jim can help you pick out the perfect motor for you electric motocycle. You can get the battery charger from Manzanita Micro. You can get the controller from Cafe Electric. Some good places for conversion books and conversion parts are:
    MegaWattMotorWorks
    KTA Services
    EV Parts
